ARCASIA + V4AF Heritage Roundtable III, Lahore, PAKISTAN

1st and 2nd ARCASIA + V4AF Heritage Roundtables were organized by President ARCASIA Ar. S. M. Jahangir Khan Sherpao and Honorary Secretary ARCASIA Ar. Ramiz Baig in July 2017 and April 2018 at Europe Region, after successfully conducting it was decided to hold the 3rd Heritage Roundtable in ARCASIA Region. Later it was announced to be held in Lahore, Pakistan.

ARCASIA + V4AF III Heritage roundtable event comprised of a series of talks, a round-table conference and a tour of historic Lahore Walled City. The series talk and roundtable arranged at the historic premises of the National College of the Arts (NCA) Lahore and moderated by Ar. Maira Khan, the series of talks was preceded by welcome addresses by Ar. M Yousaf Ghouri, Ar. Jahangir Sherpao and Ar. Ali Zafar Qazi. These were followed by overview about uncertainties regarding Cultural Heritage Conservation Presentation from Ar. Dr. Erno Kalman and comments from Ar. Sathirut Nui Tandanand. The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. Shafqat Mahmood Federal Minister for Education, Training and Heritage who emphasized the importance of heritage conservation particularly with reference to the Government initiative regarding adaptive usage of some of the heritage buildings.

What followed next was a carefully moderated session. Prof. Masami Kobayashi (Japan) deliberated upon Tokyo and Japanese Heritage, Ar. Zafar Akay (Turkey) gave an overview of historicist urban renewal and modern architecture in Old Istanbul, Ar. Cho In-Souk (Korea) discussed policy and principle of Korea’s historic cities conservation, Ar. Oleg Haman (Czech Republic) examined UNESCO Prague skyline and Ar. Chau Mui Fu (Josephine) (Hong Kong) discussed conserving Hong Kong’s old urban jungles using the case studies of Kowloon Walled City and Pokfulam Village. Ar. Jurej Harman (Slovakia) presented on UNESCO Jewels of Slovakia, Ar. Csaba Sarkozi (Hungarian) on Budapestand Ar. Turgut Cikis (Turkey) on the reconstruction of Izmir before and after the fire of 1922. Ar. Haya Qadri (Pakistan) described the Heritage Havelis of Sindh,Ar. Tang Wengsheng (China) presented about the Architects Society China, Ar. Mohammad Bin Naveed (Pakistan) discussed Heritage ,Ar. Robert Benedict (Philippines) deliberated on -living heritage, Ar. Zsolt Vasaros (Hungary) on Heritage and Ar. Sam Oboh (Canada) discussed nudging good design through messages from Alberta’s most significant heritage building. Ar. Karel Smejkal (Prague) discussed psychology of architecture, Ar. Muhammad Khalid (Pakistan) described the conservation of Sethi House, Peshawar and Ar. Thana Chirapiwat (Thailand) elaborated upon conservation and restoration.

After lunch in the historic courtyard garden of NCA, the international delegates, joined by local heritage practitioners including Ar. Sajjad Kauser Head of Architecture at Beacon house National University, Ar. Fauzia Qureshi President, ICOMOS and Ar. Yasmin Cheema COMSATS Lahore, resumed for a roundtable session. Chaired by Ar. Jahangir Khan Sherpao (President ARCASIA) and Ar. Dr. Erno Kalman (President Advisory Board V4AF) moderated by Ar. Ramiz Baig (Honorary Secretary ARCASIA), the delegates summarized their talks in short sessions. The roundtable delegates concluded the session by signing a declaration for future action towards heritage conservation.
