|This year, the IAPEX Building Material Exhibition & Conference organized by IAP – Karachi Chapter received a triumph with maximum number of stalls booked in three huge halls of the expo center Karachi where over 100 manufacturers/ suppliers from Building material industry displayed their products in more than 300 stalls.|
The event was inaugurated by Mr. Mushtaq Chapra, the eminent philanthropist. The IAPEX international conference, scheduled from April 22nd to 24th, 2016 was themed as “RESPONSIBLE ARCHITECTURE”. It aimed to highlight and elaborate the role of ‘Responsible Architecture’ in building up a global environment of collective progresses and harmony, for the times we live in and for the future. The conference, through its multiple sessions and discussion panels intended to describe the work of some notable contributions from the community of architects on national and international level. This year, the resulting response, in form of the call of papers for the conference was very well received and architects from both local and international participated enthusiastically. The 9 technical presentations, which consisted of 4 national and 5 international speakers, elaborated dealing with various social problems both responsibly and successfully and in many contexts such as that of social, climatic, responsive, accessible and historically responsible architecture.
Selection of presentations made the conference to receive an overwhelming participation by architects, IAP members, practitioners and public in general. IAPEX 2016 invited architects serving in various disciplines from around the world and had presentations on the vast subjects, from Vernacular architecture in Bangladesh to the Tropical architecture in Sri Lanka, and also highlighted the critical issues in planning, such as the accessibility in designing, etc. Ar. Rita Soh from Singapore, Ar. Abha Narain Lamba from India, Ar. Nur e Dipha Shamima from Bangladesh, Ar. Joseph Kwan from Hong Kong and Ar. Damith Premathilake from Srilanka are the names who participated as international participants. Local participants included 3 young emerging architects, Ar. Hussain Jesserwalla, Ar. Wajahat Ali and Ar. Hyder M. Ibrahim with Ar. Shahid Abdullah serving as a senior participant and Ar. Yawer Jillani as the keynote speaker. Ar. Ramiz Baig also gave a presentation on the work of IAP-KC accessibility committee highlighting the institute contribution to social responsibility. The three days long conference included enormous speakers from both national and international background who shared their vision with us was added with several other side activities, one of those being the Student’s Charrette which was participated by the nominated students from 7 accredited schools of architecture from Sindh and 1 from Balochistan under surveillance of the faculty members from each school. This not only provided students with the chance to get acquainted and work with each other but also endowed with the opportunity of interacting with senior architects and practitioner both from local and international background. The participating schools also presented stage plays and performances in the event of ‘Mastimania night’ which was followed by a musical concert. This activity highlighted the extracurricular abilities of the students and presented the softer image of their schools.
Alongside the conference and exhibition, another feature of IAPEX 2016 was the Architects portfolio, an exhibition featuring architects professional works. This year, a special stall at the main entrance of the exhibition hall lobby was created to display the ‘books authored by various architects’
The conference was summed up by Dr. Gulzar Hyder. The event culminated with the Gala Night as the closing ceremony. The closing remarks were furnished by the IAP – KC president. He praised and thanked each individual for the support in making the event successful, especially the exhibitors, national and international speakers, moderators, rapporteurs, the IAPEX 2016 organizing committee, advisory committee, charrette students and jurors, volunteers, event managers, media partners and the audience in general.
