Lecture on “Earthquake Resistant Architecture”, Peshawar

A lecture series was arranged at Symposium hall CECOS University by department of architecture CECOS University with collaboration of Institute of Architects Pakistan Peshawar chapter. The topic was “Earthquake Resistant Architecture” and lecture was delivered by prof. Engr. Muhammad Javed from University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar. The programme was commenced with the recitation of the holy Quran by Stage Secretary, Ar. Nosheed Ullah Shah.

The chairman of Architecture Department, Ar. Adnan Khan welcomed the guests. In his welcome address, he said that we all are affectees of the earthquake directly or indirectly. He said that for the last decades earthquake of intense magnitude here severely hit many countries of the world. Scientist claim that the phenomena of earthquakes will be occurring more frequently in the time to come in which region with higher human settlements and density will be more vulnerable to huge losses.

If we recall the earthquake of October, 2005 that hit Mansehra and the Northern region of Pakistan in which 90,000 people lost their lives only due to collapse of many buildings. Even multi stories buildings like Margalla towers, Islamabad collapsed and caused heavy loss to life and property. The situation after the earthquake of 2005 would not have been so bad if the buildings were properly designed for resistance to earthquakes. Hence, this requires awareness, preparedness, and appropriate use of technology for earthquake resistant buildings. As a developing nation, we realize that the marginalized communities could not afford to adopt the modern technologies to construct earthquake resistant buildings, however effort can be made by engineers and architects through research to come up with indigenous, vernacular techniques of construction which can make the buildings more resilient to system earthquakes.

After the address of Ar. Adnan Khan, Engineer Muhammad Javed delivered a detail and comprehensive lecture on earthquake resistant architecture. In his lecture he elaborated the causes of earth quakes and collapsing of buildings through earthquakes.

He explained that architecture features/designs are very important in buildings configuration, Henry Degenkolb once said that “if we have a poor configuration to start with, the entire engineer can do is to provide a band aid improve a basically poor solution as best he can.

Conserver sly, if we start off with a good configuration and a reasonable framing system, even a poor engineer can’t harm its ultimate performance too much.”

It means that architects contribution is very important in reducing the risk of buildings through design. Dr. Javed also elaborated different good and poor design for a building’s seismic performance. He beautifully presented that how buildings are twisted due to earthquakes.

He mentioned that buildings with re-entrant corners, like those H, T, U, L shaped in plan have sustained significant damages during earthquake. He proposed some solutions for architectural design. He showed pictures of some buildings in Kashmir which were failed due to same problems. He elaborated that non-structural components such as parapet walls, furniture etc. should be properly anchored to minimize the threats to human lives. His presentation was very much useful and informative for students and professionals and was food for future thoughts.

The chief guest for this occasion was Prof. Dr. Riaz Khattak, the Vice Chancellor of CECOS University. In his speech, he welcomed the guest speaker and guests who participated in the event. He appreciated the efforts of IAP and CECOS University for arranging such valuable programmes for students and professionals. He assured full cooperation to the organizers for conducting such activities. He said that this is the responsibility of Architects and engineers to work together to design earthquake resistant buildings for the people.

After the address of chief guest, Chairman IAP – Peshawar Chapter, Ar. Muhammad Khalid concluded the programme. He explained that aim of IAP is to give response and create awareness amongst Architects, students and other stakeholders regarding various issues related with built environment. He said that Architects of Pakistan facing many challenges pertaining to energy crises and natural hazards. In natural hazards earthquake is more disastrous due to its uncertainty and substantial loss of properties and human lives.  He said that architects have the vital role in mitigating the losses through Architectural design. He thanked to Dr. Javed who spared his time for sharing very precious knowledge with students and professionals. He also thanked to CECOS University as a good partner of IAP – Peshawar Chapter. For supporting to make the event successful.
