Presentations by Dr. Turgut Cikis (Turkey) & Prof. Masami Kobayashi (Japan), ISLAMABAD

As the sun set down in the cold chilly evening of October in the twin cities, the members of Institute of Architects Pakistan, Rawalpindi Islamabad Chapter (IAP-RIC) started to gather at the Crown Plaza Hotel. The excitement to attend the talk by Dr Turgut Cikis from Turkey and Professor Masami Koboyashi was evident from the full house at the auditorium. This session was in continuity to the Archi Talks series organized by IAP-RIC throughout the year.

The evening started by welcoming the speakers and the guests of honour that included President Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) Jehangir Khan Sherpao, Vice President IAP Fawad Suhail Abbasi and honorable architect from Turkey, Professor Doctor Seniz Cikis. The evening formally commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran and proceeded on with the national anthem.

President Arcasia, Jehangir Khan Sherpao extended his warm wishes in welcoming the foreign architects for being in Pakistan for their participation in programs organized by local chapters: thus exchanging of knowledge and networking amongst Architects of the region

Dr. Turgut Cikiz who is currently a visiting lecturer at Izmir Institute of Technology. Born in 1961 in İzmir, Mr. Cikis received his BS and Master’s degree from METU Faculty of Architecture. In 2011, his project, the Çeşme Marina received the mixed use Real Estate Award. Mr.Cikis has been working as a partner in Ayyapı Architecture since 1998. He gave a detailed overview on ‘Coastal & Waterfront Redevelopment’ by incorporating case studies of realized architectural projects done by his firm. He insisted on the importance of the incorporating the local materials and crafts in the development of new housing projects. He was appreciated for his insightful presentation and the satisfying answers to the attending architects’ queries. In the recognition of his talk, Chairman IAP-RIC acknowledged his participation by honoring with IAP pin and the ‘Rawalpindi Heritage Walk’ book.

Next up was Professor Dr Masami Koboyashi who is a Professor of Department of Architecture at Meiji University, Tokyo and also Principal architect of Archi-Media Architects & Associates, Tokyo Japan. He has a bachelor in architecture from University of Tokyo and a Masters in Design degree from Harvard University. The talk given by Professor Koboyashi gave a comprehensive overview of the development of architecture trends in Japan over the years and the major events that have influenced it. His presentation title from Edo to Tokyo depicted the urban growth of a town into a mega-polis. He also showed significant works of architects in Japan and explained the constraints that the zoning laws and complex building codes present for practicing architects in Japan. He concluded his talk with the current trends and issues that the architects and architecture face in contemporary Japan.

In the end Chairman IAP RIC Ar. Faisal Arshad thank the inbound delegates and participation from chapters Architects he was also very appreciated of student participation from different architecture schools.
