The Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) handing over ceremony took place on Saturday 14th January 2017 at the Serena Hotel, Islamabad. This austere evening where the Presidency of ARCASIA was handed over to Pakistani architect Jahangir Sherpao was well attended by foreign architects, Ambassadors, dignitaries and Pakistani architects.
The Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) comprises of architects from 21 countries with the institute of architects Pakistan being one of its members and for the next term of 2 years this council will be led by a Pakistani President. The Council meets annually to deliberate and to give collective direction and representation on matters that affect the architectural profession, in general, and the professional.
The new ARCASIA office bearers for the term 2017-18 led by the President Jahangir Sherpao include honorary secretary, Architect Ramiz Baig and honorary treasurer, Architect Sannah Ejaz both from Pakistan along with 12 other members from 8 Asian countries.
The event began on the morning of the 14th with the joint old and new Office bearers meeting where the official handing over of duties and responsibilities took place. This was followed by the 1st Office bearers meeting of the new committee, where the new President laid out a tentative framework of programs and events for the upcoming year. In the evening the ceremonial event mentioned earlier. The following day the celebrations came to an end with an informal brunch in a very beautiful Shakar Parian national park of Islamabad. The foreign guests enjoyed the regional music and dance and were ready to depart Pakistan with very fond memories.
It was a great honour for Pakistan that upon election the agenda set for the new term was to carry forward the work already being done for the profession in Pakistan to the Asian region. The kind of projects to be undertaken include setting up of ARCASIA emergency architects dealing with natural disasters in the region, faculty training addressing the need due to the growing number of schools as well creating linkages amongst various institutions in ARCASIA countries with other parts of the world. The roundtable culture will also be expanded to all the 5 committees of ARCASIA since it has proved to be a successful model.
Among the more significant activities of ARCASIA are the ARCASIA Forum, which takes place every two years, alternating with Asian Congress of Architects (ACA) where papers on varied subjects related to architecture are presented. Also the ARCASIA Awards for Architecture and ARCASIA magazine are the two other major activities.
ARCASIA has five active committees ARCASIA Committee on Architectural Education (ACAE), ARCASIA Committee on Green and Sustainable Architecture (ACGSA), ARCASIA Committee on Social Responsibility (ACSR), ARCASIA Committee on Professional Practice (ACPP), ARCASIA Committee on Young Architects (ACYA).
