BIM Workshop By AR Kifayat Hussain

In this ever growing era of different work practices all over the world it has become really crucial for professionals to keep pace with the trends internationally. To address the scenario IAP has always been torch bearer to hold talks & workshops that can benefit the professionals.

The Institute of Architects Pakistan – Rawalpindi/Islamabad Chapter organized a 2 day workshop on understanding building information modelling on 29-30th of November, 2018. The workshop was conducted by Ar. Kifayat Hussain who is a registered and practicing architect with more than twenty (20) years of working experience. He has worked on national and international level projects with different design and consultancy firms and remained involve in the concept and schematic design, design development, design and execution coordination, supervision, inspections and project management for the various large scale projects.

The workshop was attended by 18 professional architects and 6 cad managers from different offices. The workshop was divided into 6 different sessions spanning on 2 day period.  Each day consisted of 3 sessions starting from the introduction to BIM, and what benefits BIM is providing internationally and how we can benefit nationally.

The sessions started with 2D modelling of a simple layout of a house, the idea was to learn how to start a project in archicad from scratch and how to go about the further processes.

The instructor then briefly explained the status of BIM in Pakistan, and explained that the professional practices are slowly shifting toward BIM practise.

The participants actively took part in various practice of software and counter questions were asked from the audience for a smooth learning. Then the various workflow of documentation were explained to audience which was followed by basic ideas of navigating through the software and how the interface work. Day 1 ended with various questions from participants from day 1 learning and were answered by Kifayat Husain.

The day 2 sessions continued from where day 1 session ended. The day 2 sessions composed mostly of converting the 2D drawings into 3D model and the various technical aspects related to it. Various techniques of making openings in 3D walls and adding multiple stories was also taught.

After that Architect Kifayat taught on how to cut sections of 3D structure and making architectural elevations out of the form.

The Day 2 sessions ended with rendering techniques, and on how to directly save the 3D files.

The sessions were actively attended by RIC Chairperson Ar. Faisal Arshad and various executive committee members as well. After concluding the sessions Mr. Faisal Arshad distributed the certificates of participation among the participants, and a shield was awarded to instructor Ar. Kifayat Hussain. The workshop ended with a group photo and thank you note from the Chairman IAP RIC.
