The Institute of Architects Pakistan, Karachi Chapter hosted the Sri Lankan Institute of Architects for a series of cricket matches in Karachi from the 26th January to 3rd February 2016.
In February 2015 SLIA welcoming and gracious hosting had left the IAP team humbled and they eagerly awaited the return opportunity to host them here in Pakistan. Their cricket teams talent, discipline and well-oiled coaching has set a high benchmark and something to aspire towards, a goal which they were keen to achieve.
SLIA graciously accepted the invitation to tour Karachi, Pakistan for the return series. The IAP team led by the Honorary Secretary IAP, Ar. Ramiz Baig put on a spirited performance and fought well against a more formidable and experienced Sri Lankan team. In the end the SLIA team was the worthy winner and they retained the trophy that they won in the inaugural series last year. Though the result was not in the hosts favor but the IAP team have improved considerably in the short space of time as evident from the close nature of the matches as well as feedback from the SLIA cricket team’s management.
Apart from the cricket the Sri Lankan team was hosted for a series of enjoyable events with the intent of showing our guests not only a good time but a softer image of Karachi and Pakistan. These events included a welcome dinner hosted by our event sponsors Benitoz tiles which was very well attended by senior members of the IAP. The chief guest was the Swiss Consul General. Cricket legends Saeed Anwar and Moin Khan also graced the occasion with their presence which served as a boost to the cricket teams moral before the matches. The Sri Lankan team enjoyed an excursion on the IAP design excellence award winning boat “Al-Janglee” and the following day were hosted by TPL for a roof top lunch at their Centre Point building, a new addition to the Karachi skyline. Our guests enjoyed discovering the hidden gems of Karachi on board the super savari express, sitting atop a minibus and travelling through the downtown is truly a unique Karachi experience. The Sri Lankans also undertook a guided tour of Chawkandi, Bhanbore, Makli, Thatta and even took a dip in the Karli lake. Their last few activities included a guided tour of the Aga Khan University Hospital and the Mohatta Palace.
The event concluded with the award ceremony, the notable performances of the cricket series were as follows:
- 1st T20 Man of the match Kosala for all round performance
- 2nd T20 Man of the match Ramiz Baig (iap)70* of 49 balls, the highest individual score of the series
- 3rd T20 man of the match Azwin Haq (slia) 61 runs
- Exhibition match: Hassan Arshad (Benitoz Tiles)
- Men of the series Damith perera (slia) second highest series runs and most wkts and Aly naqvi (iap) highest series runs.
The momentum created by this well-organized IAP event convened by Hon. Secretary IAP Ramiz Baig and hosted by the Karachi Chapter under their chairman Ar. Arif Changezi should not be lost and we hope that the other chapters will now follow suit.
As with every successful event there is a team effort. Ar. Mujahid Sadiq was instrumental in getting the ground bookings during a hectic Pakistani first class season. Ar. Shamim Alam was responsible for the IAP kit design. Ar. Arshad Faruqui designed the trophies. Ar. Saad Shah helped organize the excursions and Ar. Najeeb Omar who as senior player and mentor even inspired the SLIA team to play on till the golden years. Finally no event is possible without sponsors and the IAP cricket event found a perfect match in Hassan Arshad of Benitoz tiles whose own passion for cricket contributed greatly to the event.
The Karachi chapter looks forward to inter chapter cricket series in the future. The response received from the Sri Lankans has been very positive and IAP’s goal of projecting a soft image of Karachi and Pakistan internationally was successful.
